More about the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship!
Thanks to the Gilman program for making my study abroad trip possible! Here will be more information about how they can aid with your study abroad experience!
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program which is funded by the U.S. Department of State, was created to make study abroad opportunities more accessible to students who might not otherwise be able to afford them. It provides financial aid to undergraduate students who receive Pell Grants, ensuring that those with financial need can gain global experiences that enrich their education. Many Gilman recipients are first-generation college students leading to many to be first to travel and study internationally. Gilman offers up to $5,000 in awards which can be used towards expenses such as program tuition, housing, books, local transportation, insurance, international airfare, passport and visa fees.
The Gilman Scholarship program aims to encourage generational leadership by connecting overseas education with networking opportunities. It supports students in developing cross-cultural skills, language proficiency, and global perspectives that enhance their careers and personal growth. By creating a connection for global engagement, the program helps recipients gain valuable knowledge and experience in regions critical to U.S. interests, strengthening diplomatic and economic ties worldwide while being immersed in a variety of topics educationally. Additionally, the scholarship prioritizes students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad programs, including those from minority backgrounds, community colleges, and underrepresented fields of study. As part of their commitment, recipients must complete a follow-on service project, using their study abroad experience to inspire and educate others in their communities about international opportunities.
Tips For Applying!
Due to the nature of the scholarship, the recipients are chosen based on their application, which can be competitive. As a recipient myself here are some things I believe you should know when applying:
-
Carefully consider why you want to apply for a study abroad program. This experience will be exciting for many reasons however focus on the academic and personal growth it can add to your life, career, and impact it has on others!
-
Take your time on the essays on the application. There are three essays for the application and they are all very important to whether or not you receive the award. These essays are a reflection of how you will represent the United States while abroad, as well as how you’ll respect your education and others.
-
Be interested in your essays, talk about yourself, interest, how that connects to your chosen program, don't be shy sharing stories. Keep in mind the talking points on their website for each essay.
-
When choosing a project for the follow on part of the application, consider which demographic you would like to share Gilman with, and how you want to communicate this information to them! Create a feasible project plan, how it will reach and impact the population.
-
